At Spofforth, Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject that encourages children to think creatively, solve problems, and make a real difference to the world around them. Through hands-on experiences, pupils learn how to design, make and evaluate products that have a clear purpose, building skills that they will use throughout their lives.
Our curriculum is firmly rooted in the National Curriculum for Design and Technology, ensuring that children develop the knowledge and skills needed to become confident designers and innovators. Pupils explore a wide range of contexts, including structures, mechanisms, textiles, and food, enabling them to understand how design impacts everyday life.
We provide engaging opportunities for children to:
Through a carefully planned progression of skills, children learn to:
We aim to inspire pupils to become curious, creative and innovative thinkers with a broad understanding of how products are designed and made, in other words, to think like designers and engineers. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to identify problems, generate ideas, plan and create products and evaluate their outcomes.
We aim to raise pupils’ awareness of how design and technology shape the way they live, work and interact with the world. It encourages pupils to become resourceful, enterprising individuals who have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.
The curriculum is structured to build knowledge and skills over time, following a clear long-term plan. Pupils revisit key concepts such as mechanisms, structures, textiles and food technology, allowing them to deepen their understanding and apply prior learning in new contexts. Each unit follows the design process of design, make and evaluate, ensuring that skills are embedded and refined.
Pupils develop a strong understanding of the design process—designing, making and evaluating—and are able to talk confidently about their work using appropriate technical vocabulary. They demonstrate increasing independence in generating ideas, selecting materials, and using tools safely and effectively.
